Who to consult?

This is a complex process, which will require outside consultation and partnerships. The following are basic first steps.

  1. Your Synod office: Ensure you are aware of any policies around rental activities
  2. Real estate and development professionals: assess development potential, evaluate property, and explore partnerships
  3. Legal and financial: protect congregation’s interests and understand financial viability and tax implications
  4. Community stakeholders: city planning department, community groups and potential partners

Steps to take:

  1. Essential to identify and articulate congregational values, mission, and vision. What does the congregation want to achieve? How will redevelopment align with the church’s mission?
  2. Needs assessment: Congregation’s space needs, financial needs, community needs
  3. Conduct feasibility study and market analysis
  4. Work with urban planner, developer, architect to explore redevelopment models
