Who to consult?
This is a complex process, which will require outside consultation and partnerships. The following are basic first steps.
- Your Synod office: Ensure you are aware of any policies around rental activities
- Real estate and development professionals: assess development potential, evaluate property, and explore partnerships
- Legal and financial: protect congregation’s interests and understand financial viability and tax implications
- Community stakeholders: city planning department, community groups and potential partners
Steps to take:
- Essential to identify and articulate congregational values, mission, and vision. What does the congregation want to achieve? How will redevelopment align with the church’s mission?
- Needs assessment: Congregation’s space needs, financial needs, community needs
- Conduct feasibility study and market analysis
- Work with urban planner, developer, architect to explore redevelopment models
